What is Window Glazing?

If you’re planning on having your windows replaced in Sydney, it’s essential that you’re familiar with glazing. Most people mistake glazing for improving the energy efficiency of windows, and although this is partially true, it’s not exactly accurate. Glazing refers to glass used for windows and it’s what’s installed in the window frame.

There are several types and designs of windows, however, they all come with either single or multiple glass panes. Most options with multiple glass panes have two sheets of glass. Windows that are labelled as energy efficient come with double glass panes, and they are commonly known as double hang windows due to their double panes.

In case you need to seal your home further, you can install triple glazed windows. This type of glazing has two panes with a special gap filled in the space between them, in which the gases enhance the insulation.

Compliance with Australian Standard AS1288

Glass can be a hazardous material, therefore J & J Glass and Aluminium’s glass installations strictly comply with the requirements of Australian Standard AS1288. The standard is regularly updated and requires glaziers to stay up to date with the building code.

At J & J Glass and Aluminium we pride ourselves on safety and see it as our number one priority, not only for our team but for our customers too.

The key to having a broken glass panel replaced is to have it done safely and ensure it complies with Australian Standards. Generally, this is not a DIY job for a home handy man. Glass is much like electrical work, where one small mistake can lead to a serious injury.

As with glass repairs new installations must comply with the existing building code regulations. The glass must be the appropriate product and the framing or mechanical fixing must also provide a sound and secure foundation for any new glass installation. Safety is our main responsibility and priority not only while installing glass but also for the long term safety of the installation.

Types of glass

Ordinary float glass

The standard glass you’ll see in most homes and commercial properties, and what modern windows are made of. It’s known for its flatness and simplicity.

Toughened glass

Commonly used in glass repair work, its main reason is used in most homes and commercial properties are its safety and strength. If the toughened glass is broken, the glass shatters into many smaller pieces.

Laminated glass

Commonly used as a safety glass when security and injury are of concern. If the glass is somehow broken, the shards remain stuck to the inner layer rather then shattering and causing potential injury.
